nPAR@ ` FTEXT ` 8Reese, Lizette Woodworth1856╨1935poetBorn on January 9, 1856, in Huntingdon (later Waverly, now part of Baltimore), Maryland, Lizette Reese attended the local St. John╒s Parish School and the public schools of Baltimore. After graduating from high school she taught at St. John╒s for two years, and from 1873 to 1921 she taught in various public schools in Baltimore. Her spare time was devoted almost entirely to poetry. Her first published poem, ╥The Deserted House,╙ appeared in the Southern Magazine in June 1874. Thirteen years passed before her first volume appeared under the title A Branch of May in 1887. It was reissued with some added poems as A Handful of Lavender in 1891. Over the years her painstakingly crafted poems appeared in various periodicals, and they were later collected in such volumes as A Quiet Road, 1896, A Wayside Lute, 1909, Spicewood, 1920, Wild Cherry, 1923, Selected Poems, 1926, Little Henrietta, 1927, White April and Other Poems, 1930, and Pastures and Other Poems, 1933. Reese╒s poems were at once personal and universal: universal in their concern with nature, home, and the common lot of humankind, personal in their rootedness in her own particular experience, especially her abiding delight in her rural home. In form her work remained in the traditional Victorian modes, although it often exhibited a condensed intensity that suggested some kinship with more modern poetics. Her best known piece, a sonnet entitled ╥Tears,╙ appeared in Scribner╒s Magazine in November 1899. She published two volumes of prose reminiscences, A Victorian Village, 1929, and The York Road, 1931. She died in Baltimore on December 17, 1935.
